About Mud Cooling International
Our business is the rental of specialized drilling fluid coolers in High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT) drilling situations. These coolers are used typically when drilling or reservoir temperatures exceed 50C (122F). Often the drilling mud does not have the retention time at surface to cool to an effective temperature, even in frigid winter temperatures. When drilling these deep, hot, pressured formations, producers who utilize mud coolers can experience several operational advantages such as:
- Hydrocarbon or oil-based drilling fluid systems can have dangerously high flash points when hot mud comes over the shaker. Mud coolers reduce the temperature of the mud, thus lowering the flash point of the fluid and greatly reducing the risk of an explosive incident on the drilling site.
- MWD devices are more accurate when fluids are cooled to within the tolerances of the measurement devices.
- MWD and Logging tools are not limited by depth/temperature because of reduced thermal stress and increased tool endurance, resulting in fewer trips.
- Cooler drilling fluids increase the elastomer life on pump internals and reduce the need for costly drilling fluid additives to combat those elastomer stresses.
The above benefits will reduce operational costs for the Producers.
About the Coolers
These types of units have been in operation since 1979 and were originally used on offshore operations. Today, onshore drilling activities are getting deeper and hotter which necessitates some sort of efficient way to cool the drilling fluids to extended the reach of wells in a cost and time-efficient manner. Cooling is accomplished by circulating a cooling medium (such as ethylene glycol) through the heat exchanger, much like a vehicle’s radiator. The units are easily mobilized and can be set-up in mere hours without any specialized equipment and mud cooling happens within minutes of start-up.
M.C.I.I. personnel are onsite 24-hours a day, while the unit is in operation, until the drilling program is completed.
M.C.I.I. personnel are fully certified. Certification includes H2S, First Aid, W.H.M.I.S., T.D.G. etc.
M.C.I.I. is in good standing with ISNetworld. Our safety program will meet or exceed any regulatory safety requirements.
